Unfortunately, it didn’t. The more I tried to deny it, the more it tugged at me that maybe, just maybe, I should pursue this path.
For a long time, I struggled with how to build a business around this passion of mine online because I struggled with impostor syndrome. I constantly felt like I was not good enough but those I was teaching thought I was great.
Then later, I wasn’t sure how such a passion could become profitable so for a long time, I held on to my data-sharing business, unfulfilled and out of fear of losing my source of income.
I consistently saw other people living my life, getting paid doing the same or less than I was doing, yet I couldn’t get the clarity I needed to launch out properly. I needed help.
Then I had my big “Ah-a moment”: What if I actually got certified as a coach so I would become a professional?
Within few months, I gathered all had and enrolled for Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). I made so much noise about it on my social media pages. I was finally a Coach. Now, I can charge! Now, you will have to pay me to work with you.
Ahahaha. Yeah right!
To be honest, people began to respect me more as I was better equipped to help others and even got one client who paid me N25,000 to work with her for 3 months but that was it. Nothing more for over 6 months after bagging my NLP certification.
Then it finally dawned on me… A coaching certification, just like a university degree, does not guarantee you a well-paying job.
I realised it wasn’t my fault. My passion was valid, I simply wasn’t taught how to master the business of my passion. No wonder I was struggling!
For years, I had been taught to go to school, study hard, and get a good job so that was the same approach I followed with becoming a coach – get a certification and then clients will come.
But things didn’t work out that way. I realised that to “follow my heart” wasn’t enough. I had to follow the money too! Else I would begin to resent those I was supposed to be helping.
